Maple Scan is a SwiftUI iOS and Android Kotlin app that enables shoppers to scan any product and find out if it supports Canadian businesses. Shoppers can simply scan a product, and the app uses an LLM based approach to analyze its brand, ownership, and history to help shop Canadian-first with confidence.

More details about the project can be found at maplescan.ca.

On the day of the launch, I had the opportunity to discuss the project with CityNews Calgary! The project was well received by shoppers, with the app reaching a #2 spot in the top shopping apps in Canada and #5 app overall.

Key Features

  • Scan Any Product: Use camera to capture the product details.
  • Discover Canadian Alternatives: If a product isn’t fully Canadian, we’ll suggest local alternatives to help you support homegrown businesses.
  • Tariff Insights: Find out if imported products include tariffs or special taxes that impact pricing.
  • Learn Brand History: View key company events, including founding dates, acquisitions, and ownership changes to understand how brands evolve over time.

App Icon

The app icon was developed in Figma, using the Apple Design Resources Template as a guide. Rounded corners surrounding a maple leaf were chosen to highlight the scanning aspect of the app. Meanwhile Dark mode and Tinted app icon versions are also provided for iOS.

I primarily iterated on these designs in Figma with some drafts of other app icons below.
